the heart of it

I'm making Kiri (find the pattern at Polly's blog) out of Jaeger Java. 55% rayon, 25% acrylic and 20% silk. Sort of between dk and 4ply, 50g gives about 130 meters/ 140 yards.

It has a nice drape and fantastic stitch definition with a slight sparkle to the colour. A bit splitty, but reasonably nice to work with. It was inherited from my mother's stash and been sitting in mine for a while. I think its about 10 years old, but I'm not sure. But the really notible thing about it is the way its balled. With foam insides. Look.

I've never seen that inside yarn before. Weird. When I'm finished I feel these bits of foam should be put to some crafty use. Not sure what though - cushion stuffing?

Weird. I've never seen that before either.

suppose you could use it for stuffing toys

are the rings big enough to put hands through - puffy bracelets?

How odd. I think I would feel a little bit cheated and indignant about having the middle of a ball of yarn be a big foam ring.

oh, kiri is really pretty! it's basically birch but with a center seam. i think it'll look really gorgeous in that color and weight of yarn.

those foam thingies are weird! never seen them in yarn before either.

I've had yarn wound around a foam core. It was interesting. And I know for a fact that ArtFibers winds their yarn around a foam core, too. And they use toilet paper stands to hold them, ha ha!

I rather like the idea, particularly since it seems to be for the purpose of the ball staying intact and not sprawling all over the place.

I've encountered those foam cores once before. I saved all of mine for a while but couldn't figure out what to do with them. maybe check the boards at Craftster for some ideas?

I bought some lovely wool from a flea market in New York and was convinced I had a lovely full ball. I was quite dashed when I realised that it was full of foam and thought it was something that they did on the market to make you buy more than one ball so I'm quite relieved to find it is standard practice!

Weird

How many are you going to have left? Cover them with papier mache? You might have to cover them in something waterproof first though...

You should wear those foam thingies under your sleeves and pretend you've got HUGE biceps.

As MJ said, there are foam cores in yarn from ArtFibers (faboo yarn store in San Francisco) as well. My cat thinks they make fabulous cat toys. But then she tries to eat them and I have to be the mean mommy and take them away.
